A humble beginning, Michael’s musical training began at the age of ten playing percussion in his school’s band. As his interest in music grew so did his knowledge and proficiency on a variety of instruments including rock and jazz drum set, marching and orchestral percussion. During high school, Michael was the principle drummer and percussion section leader for his schools jazz, marching, and symphonic bands. This talented young artist was offered many opportunities in the community as well which gained him valuable experience and confidence in a variety of venues. He played percussion for several community musical theater productions including Chicago and Guys & Dolls.
Michael’s real passion ignited when he was introduced to the marimba while preparing to audition for college. He studied percussion and especially marimba, at the University of Oregon under Charles Dowd (former student of Saul Goodman), Sean Wagner (former drummer for Cherry Poppin’ Daddies) and Gary Hobbs (former drummer for Stan Kenton). Within a relatively short time, he began recording previously published marimba solos for his family and soon after, began composing his own. As his technique improved, so did the complexity of his compositions.
Michael recently finished recording his first concept album, Melodies for Wooden Children, in Portland, Oregon. This long awaited album is a collection of twenty original compositions written and performed by the artist. Inspired by a dream, this collection is the soundtrack for an unwritten children’s story, each piece painting a picture of Babo, Noni and Ani and their adventures in an imaginary land. Listeners are invited to construct the story using the song titles as a guide. The story is only limited by the listeners’ imagination. Visual art for the album was designed by the very talented artist, Micalah Wilson. Michael’s music is enjoyed by a variety of listeners from the very young to the young at heart. Easily accessible, his compositions appeal to music listeners and accomplished musicians alike. You’ll find yourself humming his melodies and listening for each nuance he plays with care. You’ll enjoy your adventure in this imaginary land over and over…
